Mr Weiwei
By Oliver Twist on 26 Dec. 2012
Format: DVD
A fascinating portrait of an important contemporary figure, which touches upon both aspects of his career – his artwork and his political activism.
Along the way, ‘Never Sorry’ provides us with insights into Ai Weiwei’s early life, his family relationships and friendships, as well as glimpses into the international art world. The documentary’s understated style makes the consequences of the police brutality and detention, suffered by Weiwei during its making, seem the more shocking. This, apparently, is ‘business as usual’ in China. The film also provides us with valuable insights into modern Chinese society, and records those events which have done much to fuel Ai Weiwei’s activism.
