Wonderful bawdy fun
By wiredweird HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on August 3, 2010
I remember Playboy as a forbidden fruit in my teenage years. The hot photos held my attention most, of course. But, on those rare occasions when I could spend some time with a copy, I made sure to read the cartoons, too.
These come from every decade of Playboy’s history, so form a historical narrative in themselves. It’s interesting to see the attitudes, fashions, and trends of past years, and to get a laugh from them all over again. I also enjoy the different styles of artwork, from the delicate airbush of Vargas or Olivia, to Feiffer’s neurotic linework, to Dedini’s playful and painterly style, to Gahan Wilson’s macabre humor. I can’t call this a must-have for any collection, unless you’re a Playboy completist, but it’s still good fun for grownups.
