Train Like a Rockstar: Speaking Tips from a Stand-Up Comedian Paperback – May 5, 2016 by Jeff Birk (Author)
Imagine attending the world’s most preeminent trade show about training education and all the presenters/trainers are AWFUL! At a tradeshow about training?!?!? Something…..had…..to…..be…..done. In “Train Like a Rockstar: Speaking Tips from a Stand-Up Comedian,” Jeff Birk puts his 25+ years experience as a headlining comedian and Fortune 500 corporate trainer into this fantastic, no-frills “here’s the way you do it” book. Presenters, trainers and public speakers at any level will learn techniques and skills stemming from the author’s thousands of hours on comedy club stages, corporate event keynoting and trade show presentations. Topics include: – Humor techniques for public speaking and/or training – How to capture your audience in your first two minutes – Memorization strategies – Storytelling methods that move hearts as well as create laughter – How to handle bored, busy or booing audience members – Lists of jokes to use for a variety of industries, and much more It’s not just about being funnier. Jeff’s is a balanced approach combining numerous tactics which result in helping one communicate better and make a lasting impression. We all know what it’s like to sit through a “death by PowerPoint” presentation which lacks flow, stories, humor, a call to action or any direction at all. This book will not only help those seeking to be better public speakers but will also cause your attendees to leave your presentations saying, “That was the best presentation I’ve ever seen.”
Jeff pretty much knew his destiny when his 5th-grade classmates all voted him the funniest guy in the school. Later while in college, Johnny B’s Comedy Club in Provo, Utah became a frequent hangout for him after he decided to give “open mic night” a try in 1990. He was an instant hit. The club brought him back to open for touring comics. Soon, he was the headliner. He has opened for Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, Martin Short, Kevin James and Wanda Sykes among others. He was featured on America’s Funniest Home Videos and won the National Lampoon Collegiate Comedy Pop-Off in 1991. Jeff’s acting talents have given him the opportunity to be in a few movies (starring in “The Home Teachers”) and his wide variety of voices have been used in narration, radio and corporate advertising. Jeff has balanced all the the above with 25-plus years working as a keynote speaker and trainer for companies such as Bose, Pier 1 Imports, Bayer, Honda, Footlocker, Virgin Trains, Hugo Boss, Golden Nugget Casinos, Choice Hotels International and GE Healthcare.

Jeff gives insight into the deepest, darkest secret of the training and presentation world. Some presenters suck, there, I said it. Jeff, not one to complain, brings to the table his best secrets, practices, and anecdotes, designed and perfected through years of stand up comedy and presentations, and lays them out as an orderly and understandable smorgasbord designed with one purpose in mind; to make you a better presenter, trainer, and leader. Whether you are just starting out, or have years of experience, you will find something that can help you improve your presentation and interpersonal skills. Well written, a fun read from start to finish.
